Briareus, one of the Hecatoncheires, settled the argument by awarding the Isthmus of Corinth to Poseidon and the acropolis to Helios the sun god. Apollo later claimed the summit for himself and gifted it to Aphrodite, for whom a temple was built at the highest point of the fortress.

At the foot of the rock stood Ancient Corinth, once the wealthiest city-state in the entire Greek world. Seven archaic columns of the Temple of Apollo still stand above the ruins today. They are among the oldest standing columns in all of Greece.

Ancient Corinth controlled the narrow Isthmus of Corinth. The only land bridge connecting mainland Greece to the Peloponnese. This geographic stranglehold made Corinth extraordinarily powerful and extraordinarily coveted by every civilization that came after it.

Acrocorinth was known as one of the three Fetters of Greece during the Hellenistic period. Three fortresses garrisoned by the Macedonians to control the entire Greek world from above. Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans all took it by force at different points in its history.

The fountain of Peirene within the fortress walls was said to have been created by the tears of a grieving nymph. According to another legend, the winged horse Pegasus drank from this same spring and was captured here by the Corinthian hero Bellerophon, who rode him to slay the Chimera.

In 146 BC the Roman General Lucius Mummius destroyed Corinth entirely. He killed every man and sold the women and children into slavery. Julius Caesar rebuilt the city nearly a century later in 44 BC. In 51 AD the Apostle Paul arrived in Corinth and spent eighteen months establishing the earliest Christian community in Greece. The two letters he wrote to the Corinthians became foundational texts of the New Testament.
